The MBTA’s Green Line is finally headed to Somerville and Medford after the Federal Transit Administration okays funding. This $2.3 billion project has been in the works for quite some time and was put on hold last year after estimated costs skyrocketed. With approval, the planned 4.7-mile extension can begin construction this fall, adding 7 new stations throughout Somerville and into Medford. Lisa Battiston, DOT spokeswoman said, “MassDOT and the MBTA look forward to continuing to work with our federal partners, while continuing to invest in the improvements and long-term infrastructure upgrades to the core system over one million riders depend on each day.” This project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2021.
